Frequently Asked Questions

At Our Cottage, we believe care should feel like family. Our homes are intentionally small, calm, and filled with genuine warmth — where Residents are known by name, families are welcomed, and every day flows gently around the rhythm of those who live here.

What is daily life like at Our Cottage?

Life at Our Cottage moves at an easy, comfortable pace — much like home. Mornings begin with the smell of breakfast cooking in the kitchen, caregivers chatting softly as they help Residents start the day. Each person has their own routine — some enjoy coffee and conversation early, while others wake slowly and ease into the morning.

Our homes are small and personal, so life never feels scheduled or institutional. The rhythm of the house follows the Residents, not the other way around.

Meals are freshly prepared each day and designed by a geriatric nutritionist to meet the needs of older adults.

  • Breakfast is prepared fresh in the home and made to order.
  • Lunch and dinner are professionally prepared by chefs in an off-site commercial kitchen.
  • Menus are thoughtfully balanced for older adults, including appropriate protein levels, carbohydrates, sodium considerations, and overall nutritional balance.
  • Meals are delivered fresh daily.
  • Meals are served warm and plated individually.
  • Because we serve a small number of Residents per home, we can accommodate individual preferences, dietary needs, cultural considerations, and flexible meal timing.
  • We do not operate on a rigid institutional schedule.

We collaborate with families to accommodate preferences, special diets, and favorite comfort foods — because meals are about more than nourishment; they’re moments of joy and connection.

Our Cottage offers the warmth and reassurance of a licensed assisted living community, thoughtfully designed to feel like home rather than a medical facility. Although we do not provide clinical medical treatment or medical advice, Residents are welcome to maintain relationships with their own physicians and healthcare providers. We carefully coordinate with visiting primary care providers, home health agencies, hospice services, therapy professionals, and mobile diagnostic providers to help ensure seamless support. All medical services are provided by licensed third-party professionals.

Our homes maintain a caregiver-to-Resident ratio of 1:8 or higher at all times. As we operate on a small residential scale, our staffing levels often exceed this minimum depending on individual care needs and time of day. This thoughtful approach allows caregivers to build genuine relationships with each Resident, providing warm, responsive, and highly personalized support in a true home setting.

Our caregivers are all background-checked, trained, CPR-certified, and supervised by our RN. They receive ongoing education in dementia care, emergency preparedness, and medication management.

Many of them stay with us for years and become part of the family — offering companionship, laughter, and stability to our Residents.

We believe engagement is essential to wellbeing. Our Cottage employs a Life Enrichment Coordinator who plans weekly programs that bring variety, creativity, and joy to each home— from art, music, and movement to themed socials, holiday events, and gentle sensory activities.

Throughout the week, our caregiving team continues many of these activities daily, keeping the homes lively and connected.

We also host chair yoga, memory games, and volunteer visits. Most importantly, we follow the natural rhythm of each Resident’s day — offering gentle encouragement, but never pressure. Life here is full of meaning, warmth, and choice.

We offer Private Rooms and Shared Rooms. Availability varies by location. Monthly rates also vary depending on room selection and level of care required.

Here’s our Respite Care pricing with a minimum stay of 5 days:

  • $350 per day for the first 5 days
  • $325 per day for days 6–10
  • $300 per day for days 11–15
  • Rates continue to decrease for longer stays

Respite stays begin at $350 per day for the first five days. For longer visits, daily rates are reduced through structured pricing tiers – such as $325 per day for days 6-10 and $300 per day for days 11-15. Rates continue to adjust for extended stays. A five-day minimum stay is required.

Reservation & Coordination Fee: Up to $3,000. This fee is separate and is not applied toward the first month’s rent.

Respite Documentation Fee: Up to $500, depending on care complexity.

Rates are all-inclusive, covering personal care, meals, housekeeping, activities, and 24-hour support.

At Our Cottage, all-inclusive means families can feel confident knowing the monthly rate covers the essential day-to-day support Residents need, without hidden fees or hourly care charges. This typically includes 24/7 caregiver support, assistance with activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, and mobility, medication assistance in accordance with Texas assisted living regulations, meals and snacks, housekeeping and laundry, utilities, activities and daily engagement, and care coordination with third-party providers.

But beyond the services, all-inclusive at Our Cottage also means compassion, patience, dignity, and genuine human connection – the love and tender attention that make a house feel like home. For Residents who need a higher level of support, such as two-person assist, mechanical lift assistance, or advanced memory care, an Enhanced Care Add-On of up to $3,500 per month provides the added staffing and supervision needed to serve them well.

Yes. Our Cottage homes are licensed by the State of Texas as Type B Assisted Living and also hold specialized Memory Care Certification through HHSC. This allows us to safely care for Residents with Alzheimer’s or other cognitive conditions who need structured, secure environments.

Our Cottage is not a medical facility or nursing home. We are a licensed residential assisted living community thoughtfully designed to provide personalized daily support in the comfort of a real home environment. We do not offer clinical medical treatment or medical services, and Residents are welcome to retain the physicians and healthcare providers they know and trust. We coordinate closely with visiting third-party professionals – including primary care providers, home health, hospice, therapy services, and mobile diagnostic providers – to help support each Resident’s overall well-being.

Our focus is on meaningful daily assistance, safety, comfort, and dignity – all delivered with warmth, respect, and personal attention in a setting that feels truly like home.

What sets Our Cottage apart is not only what we provide, but the way life feels here – calm, personal, and deeply cared for. As a family-run residential assisted living community, our home is intentionally designed for a small number of Residents, creating an environment that feels warm, peaceful, and never institutional.

This intimate setting allows us to provide highly personalized support, with each care plan thoughtfully shaped around the Resident’s daily routine, personal preferences, and sense of comfort rather than a one-size-fits-all schedule. Because our caregivers are able to truly know each Resident, care becomes more attentive, more natural, and more meaningful.

Although we are not a medical facility, we work closely with each Resident’s selected third-party providers – including physicians, home health, hospice, therapy services, and mobile diagnostic professionals – to support overall well-being while preserving each family’s choice and control in medical decision-making.

Most importantly, Our Cottage is defined by warmth, dignity, respect, and genuine connection – the kind of thoughtful, personal care that makes a house feel like home in the very best sense.

No. While our management team does not live onsite, we are deeply involved and present.
Our company is professionally operated yet family-run — small enough to care personally, but structured enough to ensure consistency, accountability, and excellence in every home.
Leadership visits the homes frequently and stays closely connected with caregivers, Residents, and families alike.

Our staff is specially trained in dementia care and supported by our Memory Care–certified licensing.
We focus on comfort, familiarity, and gentle engagement rather than rigid schedules.
Families often tell us their loved ones become calmer and more social after moving in because they feel safe, understood, and truly cared for.

That’s very common — and it doesn’t mean she won’t settle beautifully once she’s here.
Our team has supported many families through this exact moment. We offer gentle introductions and short respite stays that let your loved one experience life here without pressure.
Once they see how homelike and kind the environment feels, most begin to relax and even thrive.

Absolutely! Families are encouraged to bring favorite furniture, artwork, or photos to make the space truly feel like home.
We’ll help you arrange it beautifully and safely.

We have detailed Emergency Preparedness Plans in place — reviewed annually and approved by the State.
All staff are trained in fire, medical, and weather-related responses, ensuring a calm and organized approach in any situation.

Staying connected with families is one of our top priorities. We currently communicate through regular phone calls, text messages, and in-person updates — and we’re in the process of implementing the ALIS enterprise platform, a secure, family-access online system.

Once fully launched, families will be able to log in anytime to view important updates about their loved one — including daily notes, activity calendars, menus, photos, and general community updates.

This technology will make it even easier for families to stay informed and feel connected to daily life at Our Cottage.

Leadership and caregivers are approachable, responsive, and always available to listen.

Our Cottage homes are non-smoking indoors, in accordance with state regulations and to ensure a healthy, comfortable environment for all Residents.

However, if a Resident is a smoker, we can accommodate outdoor smoking in a designated area at each home.
This allows us to respect personal choice while keeping the homes fresh, safe, and welcoming for everyone.
